Calamari Kid: A Freshwater Favourite for Fish and Chips

Calamari Kid, a fish and chips shop in Freshwater, has captured the hearts of locals with its fresh seafood, welcoming atmosphere, and inspiring story of perseverance and community support.

In December 2023, Wiraphat ‘Will’ Plathongkham, a 24-year-old entrepreneur, faced a major crisis. Mr Plathongkham had recently acquired a rundown fish and chips shop at 119 Harbord Road, Freshwater, with the hope of creating a family-run business. However, a dispute with builders during renovations left him on the brink of financial ruin.

Seated outside his shop in distress, Mr Plathongkham’s plight caught the attention of Curl Curl resident Andy King. Mr King, moved by Mr Plathongkham’s story and determination, decided to invest in the young man’s dream.

Together, they transformed the struggling store into Calamari Kid, a revitalised fish and chips shop that combines traditional charm with modern touches. Since reopening, the shop has flourished, gaining support from Freshwater locals and beyond.

Most importantly, at the heart of Calamari Kid is Mr Plathongkham’s mother, Nana, also known as Naa. A skilled chef with over 15 years of experience in some of Manly’s best venues, Ms Naa now leads the kitchen at Calamari Kid.

Mr Plathongkham’s dream was to create a business that could provide his hero—his mum—with a better work-life balance and an opportunity for early retirement. Twenty years ago, Naa made immense sacrifices to bring her young family to Australia, embodying resilience and determination. Her ever-present smile and contagious energy have made her a cherished figure in the community, representing a true Australian success story.
